Fiery Feminine - Cast in Metal View all

Long before metal carried the stories of today's women, it had already carried their forms across millennia.

Around 4,500 years ago, an artisan of the Indus civilisation cast the now-famous bronze Dancing Girl using the lost-wax technique. We do not know what she meant to her maker. Yet she remains an extraordinary witness to the material intelligence of that age.

Today, lost-wax metalcasting survives in Dhokra workshops, where fire and clay give form to another enduring subject: the women of everyday life.

A mother carrying her child. A grandmother with her grandson. A woman working the grain, carrying firewood, or returning with a basket.

The sacred feminine is celebrated in temples. Here, we also encounter the strength through which ordinary lives are sustained.

Patiently wrapped, strand upon strand, it gathers shape, depth and presence. In forms such as Maa Samleshwari, the softness of silk becomes a medium for sacred expression.

Across Bharat, the feminine divine has been remembered through sacred narratives and visual traditions spanning centuries.

In Odisha, Pattachitra became one such language of continuity. Its precise outlines, intricate compositions and traditionally prepared pigments gave visible form to sacred stories, divine personalities and inherited imagination.
