Product Description

Hand-Engraved • 100% Natural Pigments • Ordered-to-Make Artwork
Maa Durga appears in her powerful Mahishasuramardini form, surrounded by finely engraved architectural ornament and carrying multiple weapons across her many arms.
Her warm ochre-gold figure and deep red attire stand against a muted blue-green ground, while the lion and defeated demon below complete the dynamic sacred composition.
Handcrafted in Balipatna, Khordha, Odisha, the artwork combines traditional palm-leaf engraving with 100% natural pigments, allowing sacred imagery, line and material to remain visible together

The Story

The Goddess in the moment of victory

Mahishasuramardini—the slayer of Mahishasura—is one of Durga’s most powerful forms.

In Odisha’s visual traditions, Durga is frequently represented as the many-armed goddess confronting the demon, accompanied by her lion and carrying weapons associated with divine power.

This Palm-Leaf Pattachitra holds that dramatic narrative within a densely engraved frame.

The sacred figure does not sit apart from the material process.

She is carried through:

palm leaf → engraved line → natural pigment → sacred image.

For Indie Kaarigari, this is another expression of material continuity: a familiar sacred story taking form through a surface historically used in Odisha to carry text, image and narrative. Odisha’s official documentation notes Durga among the established subjects of palm-leaf art.

Material

Prepared natural palm leaves are carefully joined to create the artwork's surface. Using a traditional pointed iron stylus (Lekhani), the kaarigar engraves fine lines and intricate details directly into the leaf.

100% natural pigments are then applied by hand, bringing warmth and depth to the composition while preserving the visible texture and character of the palm leaf.
