Product Description
Hand-Engraved • 100% Natural Pigments • Ordered-to-Make Narrative Artwork
A monumental Shiva-centred narrative scroll unfolds across joined palm leaves, bringing together a large central sacred composition with multiple story, divine figures and intricately engraved narrative registers.
At approximately 20 × 50 inches, this is not a conventional single-scene artwork. The eye moves through the composition from the central sacred image into smaller episodes arranged around it, allowing the surface to behave almost like a visual manuscript.
Handcrafted in Balipatna, Khordha, Odisha, the artwork is incised by hand and coloured using 100% natural pigments. Its scale, narrative density and extensive engraving make it one of the more elaborate Palm-Leaf Pattachitra works in the Indie Kaarigari collection.
Available framed or unframed.
The Story
The Story
Shiva Katha — when one image becomes many stories
Some sacred artworks hold one moment.
This one allows many moments to live together.
A central Shiva-centred composition anchors the work, while circular medallions and horizontal narrative bands extend the story outward through additional figures, encounters and sacred scenes.
We deliberately do not assign every individual medallion to a named episode unless that interpretation is confirmed by the artisan. What is unmistakable is the larger narrative intention:
this is not simply an icon of Shiva — it is a field of Shiva Katha.
Palm leaf is especially suited to that kind of storytelling.
Its joined strips allow the surface to expand beyond a single image. Engraved line can hold fine detail, while natural pigment differentiates one scene from another without completely hiding the leaf beneath.
The material journey becomes:
palm leaf → engraved line → natural pigment → sacred image → sequence → Katha
For Indie Kaarigari, this is where Palm-Leaf Pattachitra comes closest to its deeper manuscript memory: the artwork is not only viewed.
It can be read through images.

Material
Material
Prepared natural palm leaves are carefully joined to create the artwork's surface. Using a traditional pointed iron stylus (Lekhani), the kaarigar engraves fine lines and intricate details directly into the leaf.
100% natural pigments are then applied by hand, bringing warmth and depth to the composition while preserving the visible texture and character of the palm leaf.
Care Instructions
Care Instructions
Palm leaf and natural pigments respond to their environment. Gentle care will help preserve the artwork.
- Keep away from moisture and excessive humidity.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
- Keep away from strong heat sources.
- Dust framed artwork gently with a clean, dry, soft cloth.
- Do not use water, oils, cleaning sprays or chemical polish.
- Handle unframed artwork only with clean, dry hands and preferably from the edges.
- Avoid rubbing the engraved or pigmented surface.
- Do not fold or bend the palm-leaf artwork unless specifically instructed by the artisan.
- Because of its large format, store the unframed work flat or with suitable professional support.
- Avoid placing heavy objects directly over the artwork.
Customisation
Customisation
Because this is an ordered-to-make narrative artwork, selected customisation may be discussed before production begins.
Depending on artisan and material feasibility, this may include:
- custom overall size
- framing preference
- inscription
- selected colour treatment
- adjustments to narrative layout where technically possible
Please contact us with the product link and your requirement before placing the order.
Because of the complexity of the scroll, customised versions may require a revised preparation timeline and quotation.

Disclaimer
This is a handmade, ordered-to-make Palm-Leaf Pattachitra narrative artwork.
The product imagery represents the overall design, narrative structure and visual character. Because every artwork is individually created by hand, natural differences may occur in:
palm-leaf tone
leaf-strip alignment
engraved linework
individual figures
narrative medallions
ornamental detailing
pigment density
surface texture
minor compositional details
These variations are inherent to the natural material and handmade process and make every completed artwork individually distinctive.
Colours may appear slightly different in person because of lighting, photography conditions and screen settings.
Natural palm leaf and natural pigments may also develop subtle tonal changes with age and environmental exposure.
The exact identity and sequence of every smaller narrative episode should not be inferred solely from product photography unless separately confirmed by the artisan.
Frames shown in styled imagery are indicative unless the exact framing option is confirmed during purchase.
