Product Description

Hand-Engraved • 100% Natural Pigments • Ordered-to-Make Narrative Artwork
A monumental Buddha-centred narrative unfolds across joined palm leaves, with a serene seated Buddha at the heart of the composition and multiple engraved story scenes extending above, below and along the borders.
At approximately 20 × 60 inches, this is one of the largest Palm-Leaf Pattachitra works in the Indie Kaarigari collection. Palm-Leaf strips turn the surface into something closer to a visual manuscript, inviting the eye to move through the story rather than stop at a single image.
Handcrafted in Balipatna, Khordha, Odisha, the artwork combines traditional palm-leaf engraving with 100% natural pigments and requires approximately 90 days of preparation.
Available framed or unframed.

The Story

Stillness at the centre. Stories all around.

At the centre sits the Buddha.

Calm.

Frontal.

Meditative.

Around that stillness, the artwork begins to move.

Narrative panels unfold above and below. Circular medallions continue along the margins. Figures, landscapes, encounters and smaller scenes accumulate across the joined palm leaves.

The contrast is what gives the work its character:

one still centre surrounded by many moments.

Rather than presenting the Buddha only as an isolated sacred figure, the artwork places that presence inside a larger narrative world.

Palm leaf makes this possible in a particularly compelling way.

The material can be extended through joined strips, allowing one image to become a sequence and one sequence to become a story field.

For Indie Kaarigari, the journey becomes:

palm leaf → engraved line → natural pigment → sacred image → sequence → Buddha Katha

Odisha’s palm-leaf tradition has long used joined leaves to carry illustrated religious and mythological narratives, preserving the relationship between image, manuscript and story.

Material

Prepared natural palm leaves are carefully joined to create the artwork's surface. Using a traditional pointed iron stylus (Lekhani), the kaarigar engraves fine lines and intricate details directly into the leaf.

100% natural pigments are then applied by hand, bringing warmth and depth to the composition while preserving the visible texture and character of the palm leaf.

Care Instructions

Palm leaf and natural pigments respond to their environment, so gentle care is important.

  • Keep away from moisture and excessive humidity.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Keep away from strong heat sources.
  • Dust gently using a clean, dry, soft cloth.
  • Do not apply water, oil, sprays or chemical cleaners.
  • Handle unframed artwork only with clean, dry hands and preferably from the edges.
  • Avoid rubbing the engraved or pigmented surface.
  • Do not fold or sharply bend the palm-leaf work.
  • Because of its large format, store the unframed artwork flat or with suitable professional support.
  • Avoid placing heavy objects directly over the artwork.

Customisation

Because this is an ordered-to-make narrative artwork, selected customisation may be discussed before production begins.

Depending on artisan and material feasibility, this may include:

  • custom overall size
  • framing preference
  • inscription
  • selected colour treatment
  • adjustments to narrative layout where technically possible

Please contact us with the product link and your requirement before placing the order.

Because of the complexity of the scroll, customised versions may require a revised preparation timeline and quotation.

Disclaimer

This is a handmade, ordered-to-make Palm-Leaf Pattachitra narrative artwork.
The product imagery represents the overall design, subject and narrative character. Because each work is individually handmade, natural differences may occur in:
palm-leaf tone
leaf-strip alignment
engraved linework
pigment density
individual figures
narrative scenes
medallion detailing
ornamental borders
surface texture
minor compositional details
These variations are inherent to the natural material and hand process and make each completed artwork individually distinctive.
Colours may appear slightly different due to lighting, photography conditions and screen settings.
Natural palm leaf and natural pigments may also develop subtle tonal changes with age and environmental exposure.
The specific identity and sequence of smaller narrative episodes should not be inferred solely from product photography unless separately confirmed by the artisan.
Frames shown in styled imagery are indicative unless the exact framing option is confirmed during purchase.
